Explore the TRUSU Clubs for you

A select review of some of campus's most interesting clubs

Your university experience doesn’t have to be entirely in the books. The Omega is not suggesting you ghost commitments to studying, lectures and assignments. But this is the best time to explore your interests and hobbies, and what better way to do just that than by joining a club?

Think it’s too late to join a club at TRU? Think again. Whether you’re new to university, or simply wanting to make more friends and connections, clubs are a fantastic way to make the most of your time here.

The clubs at TRU are divided into general categories including: academic, athletic, common interest, ethnic, political and religious. If you missed the annual Clubs Day event earlier this semester, do not panic because The Omega has collected, researched and surveyed a few of the many clubs and organizations offered by TRUSU so you can take your pick.

The Human Rights and Social Justice (HRSJ) Club

Both timely and engaging, the HRSJ Club offers students a chance to gather and discuss human-rights issues. Given the current international stage, more and more research continues to be invested in human rights and social justice. Which is exactly why this club could be for you. Despite only being established three years ago, there have been several HRSJ Club events that have generated interest on-campus and within the community.

The Club is run and operated by graduate students in the Masters of Arts in HRSJ program, but membership is welcome to all TRU students regardless of enrolled program. This club encourages members to bring forth different thoughts and perspectives in addition to news that matters to you. This club holds and attends events such as: protests, lecture series, conferences and movie nights to connect students on issues and solutions that matter.

TRUSU OuiSpeak French Club

Whether you are a novice french-speaker or fluent, the TRUSU OuiSpeak French Club invites you to join for casual bi-weekly meetings. The Club offers a safe and welcoming space for connecting, engaging and practicing French skills and culture.

Prospective Francophonies are encouraged to follow the Club instagram @trusufrench for more fun events!

The Comedy Club

A personal favourite of The Omega’s Arts and Culture editor, Olivia Dean. The only prerequisites are (cue drum roll) a good sense of humour, and support for your fellow comics. This club has no cost to join and features discounts on food and drink at select venues.

Now, what does one do at Comedy Club? Glad you asked. Members are invited to join fellow peers at various venues around campus and offer a line-up of both professional and casual comics. Go down to the campus pub, order your favourite dish and find yourself eye-rolling and chortling to your heart’s content. The experience is open to those who want center stage, and for others who would prefer to observe. The Club meets bi-weekly on Wednesday at 5 p.m at the TRUSU lecture hall.
