On Jan 18 the women’s basketball team took on the No.9 Ranked UVIC Vikes as one of the last five home games of the season. In spite of the team’s strong defensive efforts and standout performances, the ‘Pack fell short in a 64-45 defeat.
The WolfPack started the first quarter strong, taking an early 9-4 lead over the Vikes. Key contributions from guard Priyanca Sundher and forward Morgan Eichenberger, who combined for 11 points, helped keep the team competitive. By the end of the first quarter, the ‘Pack trailed by just three points, with the score at 19-16.
To pick up the second quarter, the Pack held a strong defence to force the Vikes down to multiple shot clock violations. WolfPack guards Jocelyn Orr, Kylee Koppes, and Sundher all helped add crucial points to the score to keep the ‘Pack in the game. Despite their efforts, the Vikes kept their lead, and the home team entered halftime trailing 35-26.
In the third quarter, the Vikes saw their lead extended. However, forward Kate De La Mare helped make big defensive plays, helping keep the Vikes to only a 16.67% shooting percentage in the quarter. On offence, Koppes bolstered the team’s efforts by sinking four foul shots. With more needed points added from Sundher, by the end of the third, the ‘Pack faced a 48-34 deficit.
Heading into the fourth quarter, the ‘Pack fought hard with intensity and determination to bring the game to a close 51-40 midway through the quarter. The team’s continued momentum on defence forced the Vikes to run the shot clock down on another possession. Unfortunately, the ‘Pack fell in defeat with the score of 64-45.
Sundher was a standout for the WolfPack, contributing 16 points, while Eichenberger also significantly contributed 18 rebounds and 11 points.
The women’s next game will be against UNBC at home on Jan 24.
