For many pop culture nerds, last month was very exciting thanks to new streaming releases like IT: Welcome to Derry, Monster: The Ed Gein Story, and The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. But now that we’re almost to the end of November and the beginning of not only our exam season but also the holidays, some might be wondering which releases are online that would serve as the best distractions.
Fear not, friends, for The Omega has your back. Just like last month, we’ve compiled some of the most compelling releases of the month, just for you.
Pluribus (November 7th) (Apple TV+; Drama, Science Fiction) (98 per cent fresh- Rotten Tomatoes)
From the infamously twisted mind behind the dramedy show, Breaking Bad, writer and director Vince Gilligan spreads his wings with yet another adventure that only he can conjure up, with his brand new series, Pluribus.
The show follows Carol (Rhea Seehorn, Better Call Saul, VEEP), the world’s most “miserable” person, who is tasked with saving the world from a hive-mind-like virus that presents itself as relentless “happiness.”
The mix of Gilligan’s superb storytelling and the raw curiosity that drives the story makes it a perfect watch for those itching for another seat-gripping tale that mimics the same tension that Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are known for. So grab some snacks and get ready to get sucked into Gilligan’s imagination once again.
Pluribus currently holds a 98 per cent fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Frankenstein (November 7th) (Netflix) (Movie, Horror, Science Fiction) (86 per cent fresh- Rotten Tomatoes)
Get ready to take a peek into Guillermo del Toro’s mind with Frankenstein, the reimagining of the classic tale in proper eerie fashion. The film follows the unforgettable scientist Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Issac, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Moon Knight), as he animates the corpse of Euphoria star, Jacob Elordi. Frankenstein, a novel by Mary Shelley (1818), is a classic piece of literature, and, in time, this adaptation may be seen in the same light. Guillermo del Toro has surpassed expectations by modernizing the finessed antiquity of Shelley’s original plot while still keeping the audience captive in an eerie world of horror.
Stream to watch the unfolding of a sadistic experiment that leads to the unravelling of the world as they know it, where, in the end, audiences are left with but one question: “Who was the real monster?”
Palm Royale Season 2 (November 12th) (Apple TV+) (TV Show, Dark Comedy, Period Drama) (62 per cent fresh- Rotten Tomatoes)
The prime time Emmy-winning Palm Royale is back with season two. The show follows Maxine Simmons (Kristen Wiig, Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call), as she schemes her way into America’s most exclusive club, the Palm Beach High Society in 1969.
This season, Maxine raises the stakes as her climb inside the Palm Beach society takes a turn where she’s forced to make a decision that will dictate how far she’s willing to go to secure her place amongst the elite.
With the natural talents of a Saturday Night Live (SNL) alum, the show gracefully tackles the drama-comedy genre, making it a perfect fit for those looking for a good laugh and exceptional storytelling.
The Mighty Nein (November 19th) (Amazon Prime) (TV Show, Animated, Comedy, Fantasy) (100 per cent certified fresh, Rotten Tomatoes)
From the minds of Critical Role, an immensely popular web series where professional voice actors play Dungeons & Dragons together, comes The Mighty Nein, a highly anticipated animated series on Prime Video.
The premise follows a group of criminals and heroes forced into an adventure of a lifetime as they attempt to prevent the world from falling into complete chaos when an arcane artifact falls into the wrong hands.
The Mighty Nein features the voice talents of some of the best and brightest in modern gaming, including Laura Bailey (Mary Jane Watson/Spider-Man PS4), Liam O’Brien (Doctor Strange/Marvel Rivals), Ashley Johnson (Ellie Williams/The Last of Us), Travis Willingham (Thor/The Avengers Video Game), and more.
For those D&D lovers, this show will immerse you in the fantastical world you’ve been playing for years.
The Family Plan 2 (November 21st) (Apple TV+) (Movie, Action, Comedy, Family) (38 per cent rotten, Rotten Tomatoes)
Mark Wahlberg (Transformers: Age of Extinction, Ted) is back with another family comedy-drama, only this time centred around Christmas.
Back in 2023, the world met Dan Morgan (Wahlberg), a former assassin now living as an ordinary suburban dad. When his past resurfaces, he’s forced to take his family on a “field trip,” unknowingly escaping from the life Morgan thought he left behind.
The sequel follows Morgan and family (Michelle Monaghan, Zoe Colletti, Van Crosby) as they are once more on the run, pursued by a new enemy (Kit Harrington, Game of Thrones).
The mix of the holiday season with Mark Wahlberg’s energetic comedy and action is sure to make you never want to turn your TV off throughout the whole movie. Now’s the time to grab your family, brew up the hot chocolate, and prepare for this dangerously festive family trip.
Stranger Things Season 5 (November 26th) (Netflix) (TV Show, Science Fiction, Drama) (93 per cent fresh, Rotten Tomatoes)
After a three-year hiatus, the Duffer brothers are finally ready to serve audiences a final helping of Stranger Things.
The series has been a Netflix hit for years as the audience was transported to a small U.S. town set in the early 1980s. What started with a group of geeky tweens solving the mystery of their missing friends leads to hidden experiments, supernatural monsters and darkness in their town.
With each season, the mystery deepens, answering few questions while raising many more. The Duffer Brothers invite you to the event of the holidays with the final season that promises to tie up all the questions fans have had for nearly a decade. The final season drops in three parts: four episodes on November 26, three more on December 25, and the series finale on December 31. Only available on Netflix.
