Unverified threat prompts campus safety update

This afternoon TRU is sounding the alarm after the university received a threatening letter

At 4:00 p.m. today, faculty, staff and students received an email from TRU VP admin Matt Milovick advising that the university had received a threatening letter containing “a suggestion of potential acts of violence on the TRU Kamloops campus.” The communication would say that the RCMP was immediately informed and that while law enforcement could not find evidence that the threat was credible, the situation was being taken seriously.

When contacted for a statement on the situation, TRU said the following:

“Thompson Rivers University received a threatening letter containing a suggestion of potential acts of violence on our Kamloops campus. The letter was immediately turned over to the RCMP, who are leading the investigation. TRU is cooperating fully and following their guidance.

At this time, there is no indication that the threat is credible, but TRU and the RCMP are taking it seriously and have implemented additional security measures on our Kamloops campus out of an abundance of caution.

We note that this period of time is busy academically, with final exams being written through to the end of next week. Exams will continue as scheduled. TRU is confident that this matter is being handled in a way that ensures public safety.

TRU cannot provide further details regarding the letter. Please contact the RCMP if you have further questions.”
