Women’s basketball stepping into last games of the season

The women, who have had a tough season, are looking to end strong

This season, the women’s WolfPack basketball team has faced an uphill battle. With only two games remaining in the regular season, the team currently holds a win-loss record of 1-17 and 747 points.

Fourth-year guard Danijela Kovacevic from Serbia spoke with the Omega about the team’s biggest challenges.

“We had a number of ups and downs,” Kovacevic said. “One of them being adapting and being more consistent. However, I feel like in the last couple of months, we were more consistent than before.”

With so few games left, Kovacevic was asked about the team’s mentality and what she felt the ‘Pack needs to do to end on a strong note.

“We just got to give our best in every game and do what the coach says,” Kovacevic said. “Hope for the best in the game.”

Scott Clark, the team’s head coach, agreed with Kovacevic’s sentiment and also discussed the team’s mindset for future games.

“The mentality is always to do the best with the resources that are provided,” Clark said. “Whatever the circumstances are, the kids have been really good. They’ve really listened. They’ve bought [onto the court] what we’ve asked them to do. I think they’re having some fun. I’m having fun.”

Despite the record, the 5’7” guard pointed out some of the positive takeaways from the season.

“One of the improvements that we have made in the last months is having each other’s back,” Kovacevic said.

Kovacevic acknowledged that even with a positive attitude, the mental and emotional struggles are still there.

“I feel like we had the moments when the pressure was bigger,” Kovacevic said. “However, the coaches and the department helped us. Also, we were trying to support each other as much as possible.”

One of the most memorable moments of the season, according to her, was senior night.

“Last week, the senior night was beautiful, and we got the win,” Kovacevic said. “We had everyone come out that night, and it was a very good game.”

Clark mentions that every practice is memorable.

“Every day in practice [is memorable],” Clark said. “I think it’s been fun for me, teaching basketball, [a sport] I enjoy. Hopefully, they’ve had fun competing. When we talk about fun or outstanding moments, I think that it’s a process. So it’s every day. Our definition of fun has to be that we’re trying to get better as a group and enjoy that process.”

Kovacevic has a special message for the TRU community and the team’s supporters.

“Thank you, everyone, for the last four years,” Kovacevic said. “Thank you for always supporting us.”

Last year, the team ended the regular season with a win-loss record of 2-18 and 965 points.
