On Nov. 9, the women’s basketball team played their second home game of a doubleheader against the #4 ranked UBC Thunderbirds.
TRU’s Danijela Kovacevic led the charge for the WolfPack with 14 points, showcasing her scoring ability as a standout player. Priyanca Sundher and Sydney Vollrath each added eight points, while Morgan Eichenberger controlled the boards with ten rebounds, along with two assists and three steals. For UBC, Sofia Bergman scored a team-high 16 points, Jessica Clarke contributed 13, and Olivia Weekes chipped in with 11.
The WolfPack came out strong, with Vollrath and Sundher scoring the game’s opening points to give TRU an early 5-0 lead. Kovacevic, Sundher, and Randall combined to keep pace with UBC’s offence, as the WolfPack trailed by just four points, 19-15, at the end of the first quarter.
The ‘Packs momentum continued into the second quarter, backed by the tough defence and timely scoring. Kamloops locals Jocelyn Orr and Jaya Saroya provided critical points, with Orr hitting a three-pointer late in the quarter and Saroya completing a strong and-one play with just seconds remaining in the half. By halftime, the WolfPack were down just 27-32, holding their own against the experienced Thunderbirds.
The game took a dramatic turn when UBC took control in the third quarter, shooting 45% from the field, adding 23 points and pushing their lead to 20 overall. Although Kovacevic responded with six points in the quarter, TRU’s offence struggled to keep up with UBC’s sustained attack. The Thunderbirds maintained their momentum through the fourth quarter, securing a 74-43 win.
The women’s next home game is tonight at 5:30 versus the UFV Cascades, who currently boast a 3-1 record for the season.
