Women’s basketball team suffers another loss

With their sixth loss of the season, the women find themselves at the bottom of the Pacific division.

Following back-to-back home-game losses to the UFV Cascades, the WolfPack women’s basketball team remains dead last in the Canada West Pacific division with a 0-6 record for the season.

During Saturday’s game at TCC, the Cascades set the tone early, holding ‘Pack to 12 points in the first half. UFV’s guard Maddy Gobeil led the visiting team with 11 first-half points as they built momentum to a 35-12 lead at halftime.

TRU regrouped in the third quarter – their highest-scoring frame of the game. Olivia Randall knocked down a three-pointer, while Lucy Marchese and Olivia Wheatley capitalized at the free-throw line, achieving a perfect throw percentage for the game.

Nevertheless, UFV returned in the fourth quarter, getting 24 points and securing the victory.

Despite the loss, TRU showed strong individual performances. Kate De La Mare led the team with five points while showcasing a great defensive performance with three blocked shots and Morgan Eichenberger blocked nine rebounds to lead the team.

On the Cascades side, Kamloops native Gobeil showcased a dominant game, scoring 28 points, including three three-pointers, four steals and four blocked shots. Bernie Leda added 12 points for the visiting team. Forward Julia Tuchscherer contributed nine points, a game-leading 12 rebounds and five assists.

With the win, UFV improves to 5-1 in the season, while TRU is still in the search for the first win and sitting at 0-6.

The women’s basketball team will next play a pair of games on the coast, facing off against the Trinity Western Spartans on Nov. 22 and 23.
