In a high-stakes Canada West clash, the number three University of the Fraser Valley Cascades outlasted the number four-ranked Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s volleyball team in a five-set battle on Friday night in Abbotsford.
Set 1: UFV dominated from the start, capitalizing on TRU’s .031 hitting percentage and closing on a 13 – 3 run to win 25 – 15.
Set 2: TRU showcased an impressive performance, with the Manitoba-born Brooklyn Olfert contributing six kills. A strong 6 – 1 start set the stage for their 25 – 17 victory in the second set.
Set 3: WolfPack maintained their momentum, with Olfert and fourth-year setter Hadley Schmidt combining for eight kills to secure a 25 – 15 win.
Set 4: UFV regrouped, using rolling shots to disrupt the ‘Packs rhythm and claim a 25 – 19 set victory.
Set 5: The team battled to a 6 – 6 deadlock before Cascades’ 4 – 0 run sealed a 15 – 10 win.
Throughout the game, Olfert showcased her power, tallying 21 kills with only four errors in 41 attempts. The fourth-year outside hitter also contributed an ace, a solo block and 11 digs. Additionally, Schmidt added 29 assists, while middle Addison Witkowski had a solo block and two assisted blocks.
The loss dropped TRU to 4 – 1, upsetting their historic season start. UFV improved to 6 – 1, securing their position.
