With less than two months remaining until British Columbians head to the polls on Oct. 19, the BCNDP has chosen Maddi Genn as its candidate for the Kamloops-North Thompson riding.
Rick Turner, president of the Kamloops-North Thompson BCNDP, made the announcement during a press conference on Aug.19.
“My goal is a more equitable and accessible future,” Genn said. “[…] I believe that we can do more to make Kamloops and the North-Thompson, as a whole, a more affordable place to live. I want to improve healthcare accessibility and increase safety. Together, we will continue to tackle the unregulated drug supply and related death crisis.”
According to a press release, Genn grew up in Salmon Arm but moved to Kamloops in 2016 to attend TRU, where she earned a diploma in Human Services. Since then, she has put her education to good use, working with at-risk youth and serving as her union’s health and safety representative and chairperson.
“I work in healthcare supporting and advocating for at-risk youth and have spent the last four years as a union representative, supporting and advocating for my colleagues in the United Steelworkers Union,” Genn told reporters. “I have seen, and I understand firsthand, the struggles people and families have securing affordable housing and making ends meet.”
According to Turner, Genn’s official nomination will occur on Sept. 8 during a Kamloops-North Thompson BCNDP meeting.
