Heat warning persists in Kamloops

Residents are reminded to stay vigilant while the unusually high temperatures continue.

As the province continues to endure elevated temperatures, Environment Canada reminds residents of Kamloops that a heat warning is still in effect across the region.

According to the current forecast, Kamloops can expect an average daytime temperature of 39 C from July 18 to 22 before eventually dropping to a more familiar seasonal average early next week.

“An extended period of high temperatures will continue as a ridge of high pressure remains over the region. Little relief is expected at night with elevated overnight temperatures. Current guidance is indicating that the high temperatures will continue through the weekend, then become more moderate early next week,” Environment Canada said in an updated heat warning Thursday morning.

The warning reiterated that although high temperatures pose serious risks to everyone, certain demographics remain at a higher risk than others, including “seniors, people who live alone, people with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or respiratory disease, people with mental illness such as schizophrenia, depression, or anxiety, people with substance use disorders, people with limited mobility.”

While the heat event is in effect, the City of Kamloops offers several ‘heat relief’ options.

Located at 300 Lorne Street adjacent to Riverside Park, the Sandman Centre will serve as a cooling centre again. The facility will be open to the public from noon to 8 P.M. until the heat event is lifted. Please note: While the space is open to all residents, the city reminds the public that pets are not permitted in the building. For more information click here.
